Get to know George Chahal, MP for Calgary Skyview…
George grew up in a home where public service was not optional. Whether it was through volunteering at the local Sikh Gurdwara, or his father Ram’s involvement in the provincial Liberal Party, giving back to the community forms part of the Chahal DNA.
As a graduate of the University of Calgary, first with a bachelor’s degree in economics, followed by a master’s degree in planning, George’s studies prepared him well for his years in elected office. He was elected as a city councillor in 2017, representing the Northeast Calgary neighbourhoods he grew up in while building a career.
In his tenure as Ward 5’s municipal politician, George brought a new focus to the historically underappreciated areas east of Deerfoot Trail in Calgary. He was an advocate for public safety and brought forward a Public Safety Task Force to address a growing gun and gang violence trend. Former Public Safety Minister Bill Blair supported this work. George believes that everybody is responsible for keeping their communities safe and clean and he works alongside his constituents through yearly community cleanups. He supported the work of the Calgary Police Service in his role as a Calgary Police Commissioner. He helped the city bring forward many common-sense traffic safety improvements in the area he represented.
After a massive hailstorm devastated NE Calgary, George showed leadership in bringing forward city resources to support those affected, including tax relief and a Resilient Roofing Rebate program. Understanding that climate change is real, George believes that we must do everything to prepare our towns and cities for future weather catastrophes.
George has been Northeast Calgary’s strongest voice since his election in 2017. He is honoured to serve and advocate for those living and working in the great neighbourhoods that thousands of new and established Canadians call home. As a new Member of Parliament, he will not stop fighting for a better future for all those living in Calgary and across Canada’s prairie region
